Battle of the Bay - South Africa
Cape Town delivered the most spectacular day for an action filled SUP race. The BoB included the Elite sanctioned race, which serves as the 3rd of 5 races to select the South African SUP team to travel to Peru in February 2013.
30 paddlers set out from Milnerton in windless 3-4ft glassy conditions. It was Durban challenger Scott Rutherford and Dylan Frick who blazed right off the beach. Although the top 2 Elite paddlers swapped places a number of times en route, it was Scott who beached at Blouberg 100m ahead of Dylan, as he headed out for the second half of the Elite 20km race. The two of them traded places for the lead all the way to the Seli and back, but in the end it was the experience of Scott Rutherford that had that little extra to give coming into the Bay and in all probability stake a claim to one of the 2 spots in the SA SUP Racing Team. In the Open Division, the Italian Stallion, Pietro Muscas on his new Javelin MC 14 showed why he has the real deal 6-pack and stole the show from Justin Bing and Tom King. Congratulations to everyone.
