Bernd Roediger and Annie Reickert Podium in Grueling Paddle Imua Charity Race on Maui
May 5, 2018, Maui, Hawaii – Naish’s Annie Reickert and Bernd Roediger both put on an incredible display of grit and determination hammering down the 10-mile course on their Naish Maliko 14’0″ from Maliko Gulch to the Kahului harbor in less than ideal conditions.
Hammering out the Womens 14′ class win was Annie Reickert, following up her third place in the womens elite division of the Olukai Ho’olaule’a which looked more like the Red Bull Heavy Water with 20 ft surf the previous weekend. In the Paddle Imua, Annie was beaten only by one other woman, Sonni Honscheid who was paddling an unlimited board. Another impressive statistic is that had she been racing in the mens division she would have just missed the podium in fourth place, right behind Naish team mate Bernd Roediger.
Bernd, who proved in 2017 that he is a major threat to win any downwind race he lines up for showed that he is far more than a downwind specialist. pounding out the miles to finish third in the Mens 14′ class. Despite conditions being less than ideal, Bernd’s perspective for the race captured what this event is all about, which is bringing the paddling community together to help support Imua Family Services, which helps familys with special needs children on Maui.
“Bluesmiths and Camp Imua hosted another successful charity race! We didn’t have perfect conditions, true. But a 10 mile grind was nothing compared to the kind of challenges these kids at Camp Imua are facing everyday of their lives, nor was it comparable to the level of philanthropy provided by Imua Family Services,” said Bernd in a statement on his Instagram.
Despite Maui’s traditional trade winds being absent for the first two major races of 2018, action on the water has been far from void.
