Bernd Roediger Earns a Podium Spot at the Aloha Classic
October 27, 2019, Ho‘okipa, Maui, HI – “The samurai has struck again!” exclaimed one of the announcers, Kai Katchadourian, this weekend following Bernd Roediger’s perfect 10 wave that helped earn him a 3rd place podium spot at this years Mercedes-Benz Aloha Classic.
It was the final event of the International Windsurfing Tour for 2019 and took place right in our backyard. The North Shore of Maui was hit with mast and a half high swell and light winds at this year’s event, putting athletes to the ultimate test of their big wave riding abilities. Countless boards were destroyed, masts broken, and bodies were raked over the infamously destructive rocks at Ho‘okipa, but the Naish team held strong. Naish team riders, Ryosuke Fukui and Brian Talma, were also competing in double elimination which was canceled due to the diminishing wind.

This event always throws a wrench in the IWT as local Maui riders accustomed to the large winter swells in the islands, can mix up the world tour’s rankings dramatically. This year was no exception, as Bernd impressed the crowd with a combination of radical wave riding and 100% dedication. Bernd orchestrated arguably the best wave of the contest, which earned him a perfect 10-point score during the semi-finals and was the first of only two perfect tens awarded throughout the contest.
On the wave that set Bernd apart from the rest, he charge through a powerful turn followed by a smooth aerial, then stomped a massive goiter on an over-mast high wave riding his custom quad fin Assault board with his Force 4 sail in his hands. “Bernd Roediger just opened a can of a whoop ass the size of Big Island!” – shouted Aloha Classic announcer, Kai Katchedourian. Bernd continued dominating heading into the finals and onto the podium.

Claiming third place in the prestigious Aloha Classic put Bernd in the third place position overall for the International Windsurfing Tour among some of the best watermen in the world, with Antoine Martin taking first place and Camille Juban placing second.
“He {Bernd} is a wildly talented waterman and once again shows he is one of the all-time greats.” – quoted from International Windsurfing Tour’s social media. Bernd now swaps his sails for SUP as he heads to Barbados to compete in the APP World Tour Barbados Pro AM, which is scheduled to run from November 11-17. Keep ripping, Bernd!
