Casper Steinfath Takes First at Sieravuori SUP Masters ­

July 4, 2015, Sieravuori, Finland – Casper Steinfath was crowned champion of the 2015 Sieravuori SUP Masters, on the Sieravuori Lake in Finland last weekend, after winning both of the challenging long distance and sprint heats.

The Siervuori SUP Masters is the third stop on the European tour and is located on the beautiful Siervuori lake in Finland. With a total of four races, the European Cup consists of three 4-star races, held in various countries, in addition to one 5-star race—incorporated into the Barcelona stop of the SUP World Series—held in June. The fourth and final race of the European Cup will be held in Rome, Italy on July 24-26 of 2015.

The first heat of the event, a 10 km long distance race, had mixed conditions with both flatwater and grueling upwind and downwind sections. The lead pack stayed together for the first few minutes of the race, until they hit the downwind section and competitors began to spread out. Painting a picture of how he got the lead, Casper explains that he began, “…picking off some nice bumps on my Naish Javelin LE 12’6” in order to stay ahead, and quickly got into a good rhythm. I realized I was creating a gap back to the rest of the field and that’s when I hit the gas.” Once he realized how much distance he had between them, he increased his pace and paddled as hard as he could until the end, ensuring his 1^st place position.

The next day was the final sprint round. It was a competitive race the whole way through. Casper explains the course as a, “tight 500 meter affair with lots of buoy turns and carnage opportunities.” However, with sprints being Casper’s favorite discipline, he enjoyed the challenge. After a tough paddle battle with Leonard Nika, he maintained his lead and took the 1^st place spot again for the second day in a row.

This overall win in Finland has propelled Casper into 1^st place on the European Cup ranking, putting him in great position to defend his status in Italy at the end of the month. Pleased with his win, Casper shares: “I am really happy with this result and I couldn’t have done it without the amazing support of all my sponsors, friends and family! This was a big boost for me and I can’t wait for the final European battle in Rome in 2 weeks!” Good luck Casper!
