Kody Kerbox Tech Series: Paddles
Choosing the right paddle can be a daunting task with so many different options in constructions, blade sizes and uses from all-around to surf to race. To help bring some clarity to a hazy subject here a few tips to selecting the right paddle for you. There are a few questions you may want to ask yourself as to what you will be using the paddle for, who will be using the paddle and how much you are willing to spend.
Fixed vs. Adjustable
The debate on fixed vs. adjustable seems to be everlasting. Robby Naish, for example, prefers to use an adjustable because it allows you to adjust heights throughout your session and work your shoulder from different angles. Another advantage with an adjustable paddle is the ability to get dialed in to the perfect height.
Many of our team riders prefer fixed paddles however this is largely in part to having a more consistent flex throughout the shaft which results in a more direct transfer of energy through each stroke.
Blade Size
Blade size is another factor when narrowing down your selection. Naish makes several different options ranging from 75 square inches to 95 square inches. Typically a smaller blade size is advantageous to higher reps while larger blades are better for building strength.
Construction
It seems like there are endless options when it comes from paddle constructions and Naish is no exception. If you want a paddle that provides great performance in a variety of conditions the Performance and Carbon lines are great options. If you are looking for a little more direct transfer of energy with a stiffer shaft the Carbon Plus and Carbon Elite may be a better option. For the exclusive wave rider, Naish makes the Kevlar Wave, which features a full Kevlar wrap to handle the abuse that playing in the waves can entail.
